Police raid Deutsche Post CEO in tax evasion probe

Police raided the home and offices of Klaus Zumwinkel, the chief executive of Deutsche Post AG (DPWGn.DE: Quote, Profile, Research) and a pillar of Germany’s corporate establishment, on Thursday in a probe into suspected tax evasion.

The 64-year-old manager is accused of dodging around 1 million euros ($1.46 million) in taxes by transferring money to trusts in Liechtenstein, a German state prosecutor’s spokesman said on Thursday.

Investigations were being carried out into several people, the spokesman added.

Zumwinkel’s three-storey villa in a leafy suburb of the German city of Cologne was raided in the early hours of Thursday, along with his office at the group’s towering headquarters in the nearby city of Bonn.

Hours later, Zumwinkel, dressed smartly and wearing a dark overcoat, was taken from his home in an unmarked police limousine to the state prosecutor’s offices.

He was later allowed to leave after posting bail of “a not insignificant amount,” the spokesman for the authorities said.

Shortly before 11:00 a.m http://savingpaydayloans.com. EST, Deutsche Post issued a brief statement saying the CEO had responded in detail to the authorities and had returned home.

“The entire board of management including Chief Executive Officer Klaus Zumwinkel is fully functional and continues its business as usual,” the company added.
