Delta to revive RDU-Los Angeles nonstop flight

Delta Air Lines is giving nonstop service between Raleigh-Durham International and Los Angeles another shot.

The Atlanta-based airline will resume nonstop flights between RDU and L.A. on June 10, the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority announced Thursday.

Delta (NYSE: DAL) offered service to the popular leisure and business destination from June 8, 2006 through January 2008. But the carrier discontinued service due to escalating fuel costs and schedule changes.

RDU officials put City of Angels back on top of their wish list for nonstop service. The wish was fulfilled with Thursday announcement.

“RDU is very excited to welcome back service to Los Angeles,” RDU Director of Marketing Teresa Damiano said in the written statement. “L.A. is a major metropolitan city with which our region has strong business and leisure ties, which is evidenced by the more than 250,000 people who travel between L unsecured personal loans.A. and the Research Triangle region each year.”

After a difficult past couple of years due to the economic downturn, RDU has gotten quite a bit of good news on new flights recently.

Midwest Airlines will return to RDU with two daily nonstop flights to Milwaukee starting April 1. On May 1, JetBlue will add two daily flights to Boston, which will give the carrier a total of three daily flights between RDU and that destination. Also, fellow low cost carrier Southwest (NYSE: LUV) will begin service to St. Louis on May 9.
